A fan heater is the quickest way to warm a small room such as a bedroom, study or box room: it blows air over a hot element, so you feel the heat within moments of switching it on. For a small room you rarely need more than 2kW, and many people find a 1.5kW ceramic heater with a thermostat is plenty. The features that make the biggest difference are a thermostat, so the heater cycles off once the room is warm, tip-over protection, a timer and how quiet it is at night. This guide compares cheap 2kW fan heaters, ceramic models with timers and a 500W desk heater, using only details from each Amazon UK listing. For a bigger room or a steadier heat, see our best oil filled radiator guide. The title lists 70 degree oscillation, a 12-hour timer and overheat and tip-over protection.

How much power does a small room need?
Most small rooms are covered by 1.5kW to 2kW. Philips suggests its 1500W heater for rooms up to 15 square metres, and Abode suggests its 2000W heater for about 20 square metres. A 500W desk heater such as the Gaiatop (£16.99) warms the area around you rather than the whole room.
Running cost is simple to work out: a heater's power in kilowatts multiplied by the hours it runs gives the kWh used. A 2kW fan heater on full for one hour uses 2kWh, and a 1.5kW heater uses 1.5kWh; multiply by the unit rate on your electricity bill. A thermostat cuts the heater out when the room reaches temperature, so real use is usually lower.
What to look for in a fan heater for a small room
Thermostat. A thermostat stops the heater running flat out once the room is warm, which saves electricity. All but two heaters here list one.
Tip-over protection. Important in bedrooms and homes with pets or children. The table shows a dash where the listing does not mention it.
Timer. The Dreo and FLANUR heaters have 12-hour timers, handy for warming a room before you use it.
Noise. Fan heaters make some noise. Philips quotes as low as 24dB(A) for its ceramic heater; most other listings do not give a figure.
Ceramic or standard. Ceramic (PTC) heaters such as the Pro Breeze, Philips and Dreo are typically more compact; standard fan heaters such as the Warmlite and CUQOO cost less.
Placement. Keep heaters on a flat, stable surface and away from bedding, curtains and clothes, and follow the safety instructions in the manual.
How we chose these picks
We only included products that were in stock on Amazon UK with a single live buy-box price in pounds when we checked on 27 October 2026, read with a UK delivery address. We skipped listings showing low stock, no stock line or unclear details, and we avoided repeating products already featured in our other guides. Specs in the comparison table come from each product's Amazon UK listing, and a dash means the listing does not state that detail. Descriptions are based on what each listing says; we have not tested these products ourselves, and we have not used star ratings or review counts.

Frequently asked questions
Are small fan heaters expensive to run?
A fan heater uses its rated power while the element is on, so a 2kW heater on full uses 2kWh an hour and a 1.5kW heater 1.5kWh. Multiply that by the unit rate on your bill. Using a thermostat, a lower setting or a timer, and heating only the room you are in, keeps the cost down.
Are fan heaters efficient?
At the point of use, plug-in electric heaters turn the electricity they use into heat, so a fan heater is as efficient as any other electric heater of the same power. What changes the bill is how much power it draws and for how long, which is why a thermostat and timer matter.
Do fan heaters produce carbon monoxide?
No. Carbon monoxide comes from fuels such as gas, oil, coal and wood that do not burn fully, according to the NHS. Electric fan heaters do not burn fuel, so they do not produce it.
