Our picks
Best overall: Gaiatop Rechargeable Hand Warmers 2-Pack. A pair of pocket-sized electric hand warmers that the listing says heat up in about three seconds and have three heat settings (40°C, 50°C and 55°C). Each one measures 8 × 4.6 × 1.8 cm and weighs 65g, and the two warmers stick together magnetically. The listing quotes 8 to 18 hours of heat from a full charge. It was £10.99 on Amazon UK when checked, and it suits almost anyone who commutes, walks the dog or works somewhere cold.
Best budget: Grower's Cup Christmas Coffee Gift Box. A Christmas gift box with five single-estate coffees in Grower's Cup Coffeebrewers, single-serve brewing pouches that the listing says are light and easy to take anywhere. The listing says the coffee is organic and Fairtrade and roasted in small batches in Denmark. It was £7.45 when checked, so it also works if your group's limit is £10, and it is an easy pick for the office coffee drinker.
Best for the whole group: More or Less Card Game. A trivia card game where players simply answer "more" or "less" to each question, for two or more players aged 12 and up, according to the listing. It was £11.95 when checked. Because anyone can have a guess, it is a gift the recipient can bring out at the office party or over Christmas with family.
Other gifts worth a look
Boxer Gifts As Per My Last Email Flipbook. A joke flipbook that "translates" polite work emails into what you really mean, with a pull-out stand so it can sit on a desk. It was £7.99 when checked and is a safe, office-friendly laugh.
Dusor Magnetic Fidget Pen. A pen made of magnetic pieces and steel balls that you can rebuild into different shapes. The listing says it includes three pen refills, two touchscreen tips and an LED light. It was £13.71 when checked and suits fidgeters and desk-gadget fans.
Hinshark Telescopic LED Magnetic Pickup Tool. An extendable magnetic pickup tool with three LED lights and a flexible neck, made for picking up dropped screws and bolts in tight spaces. The listing says it runs on LR44 button batteries. It was £14.39 when checked and is a practical pick for anyone who does DIY or works on cars.
Nextronix Scented Candles Gift Set, 9 Tins. Nine small soy wax candles in different scents, including vanilla, lavender and rose. The listing says each tin holds 2.5 ounces of wax and burns for 15 to 25 hours. At £18.99 when checked it uses most of a £20 budget, so it is best if you know the person likes candles.
What to look for in a Secret Santa gift under £20
Stay inside the limit. Secret Santa only feels fair when everyone spends roughly the same, so check the price on the day you order, because Amazon prices move. Several picks here came in well under £20, which leaves room for a card or wrapping.
Pick something most people can use. When you draw someone you hardly know, useful and neutral beats personal. Hand warmers, coffee and a card game work for most people, whatever their age or job.
Keep it office-safe. If the swap is at work, avoid rude jokes and anything that could embarrass the recipient in front of colleagues. Every product in this guide is suitable for a work Secret Santa.
Check delivery dates. Order early in December so the gift arrives before your swap, and check the delivery estimate on the Amazon page for your postcode.
Think about extras. Rechargeable gadgets need a charging cable, and the magnetic pickup tool needs button batteries; read the listing to see what is in the box before you wrap it.
