A science advent calendar swaps the daily chocolate for a small experiment, a build or a dig, so the useful questions are different from a sweet calendar: which subjects does it actually cover, how old does the child need to be, and what will you have to find in the kitchen cupboard or the battery drawer on a school morning?

A science advent calendar swaps the daily chocolate for a small experiment, a build or a dig, so the useful questions are different from a sweet calendar: which subjects does it actually cover, how old does the child need to be, and what will you have to find in the kitchen cupboard or the battery drawer on a school morning? The calendars on Amazon UK fall into four rough types: mixed chemistry kits with a new reaction most days, physics and electronics calendars that build models or circuits, geology calendars where each day is a geode to crack, and themed kits such as a human body model built over 24 days. Every calendar below has 24 days. The comparison table sets out what is behind the doors, the subjects, the stated age and the extras each Amazon UK listing mentions, so you can match a calendar to the child rather than to the box art. We found 9 science advent calendars in stock on Amazon UK with a live buy-box price when we checked on 3 November 2026. Our overall pick is the Einstein Science Adventures Advent Calendar Kit 2026 at £29.90, the budget pick is the sudatong Physics Science Experiments Advent Calendar 2026 at £14.99, and our pick for teenagers is the iWinvi Physics Science Experiment Advent Calendar 2026 at £19.98. Prices and stock change often, so check both on Amazon before you buy.

How this guide was put together: we read each calendar's Amazon UK listing on 3 November 2026 with a London delivery address and kept only science and STEM calendars with a single live buy-box price and a normal in-stock line. The subjects, ages and extras in the table are the sellers' own descriptions; where a listing does not say, the table shows a dash. We have not done these experiments ourselves. Our top picks

Best overall: Einstein Science Adventures Advent Calendar Kit 2026 (£29.90). Our overall pick because it is the most rounded experiment calendar we found in stock. A large box opens to 24 smaller boxes, each hiding a science trick or experiment drawn from physics, optics and optical illusions, maths and chemistry. The listing says the lab tools are included apart from common household materials, and that each experiment comes with a video guide plus a handbook explaining the science. It is pitched at ages 8 and up with some guidance, and 13 and up to work alone, which makes it a good fit for a mixed-age family.

Best budget: sudatong Physics Science Experiments Advent Calendar 2026 (£14.99). The cheapest calendar here is a build-a-model calendar rather than a chemistry set. Behind each window is a set of components to build one of 24 small models, and the listing says models from different days can be combined to make new things. All components and wiring are included, with an illustrated step-by-step manual, but batteries are not, so check the manual for the type before 1 December.

Best for teenagers: iWinvi Physics Science Experiment Advent Calendar 2026 (£19.98). Aimed at teenagers, this calendar builds towards one larger physics project. The listing describes 24 compartments arranged from easy to hard, covering electricity, magnetism, optics, acoustics and mechanics, with series and parallel circuits, magnetic detection and gear tests. It says no extra supplies are needed, and parts such as a compass and resistors are included, with a colour manual in English.

More science advent calendars compared

UNGLINGA Science Advent Calendar 2026, 24 Days Experiments Kit (£16.99). A mixed chemistry calendar at a lower price. The listing describes a new experiment each day, including chemical reactions, crystal growing, physics and magic, with topics that also take in geology and optical illusions. Components and an instruction manual are included, and the stated age is 8 and up.

UNGLINGA Science Advent Calendar 2026, Nature and Fossils (£19.99). A second UNGLINGA calendar with a nature and dinosaur slant. The listing mentions an erupting volcano, foam eruptions, crystal growing, illusions, and excavating fossils and learning how dinosaur fossils form. It says all tools and a step-by-step manual are included. The stated age is over 96 months, which is 8 years.

pozemu Science Experiment Advent Calendar 2026, 24 Experiments (£22.09). A door-a-day experiment calendar with classic kitchen-table science. The listing names an underwater volcano, a crystal growing tree and wiggly worms among the 24 experiments, and says most materials and tools are included, with extras being common household items such as water, cooking oil and paper towel. It is listed for both kids and adults, so it can work as a family activity.

JOYIN Gem Mining Science Advent Calendar 2026 (£23.99). A geology calendar rather than an experiment kit. The listing describes 24 pieces: a rock hammer, flat chisel, brush, magnifying glass and polishing cloth, plus 21 crystal geodes to crack open, and parts for two necklaces and two keychains so the crystals can be wired into jewellery. It is listed for ages 8 and up, and cracking geodes with a hammer is something to supervise.

RYJJEEST Experiments Advent Calendar 2026, 24 Wooden 3D Builds (£41.30). Each of the 24 numbered bags builds a different wooden model, from a periscope and pinhole camera to a Newton's cradle, catapult, hydraulic lifting bridge and electric fan. The listing covers mechanics, aerospace and electrical engineering and gives the age as 8 to 14. Two things to know before buying: batteries for the electric models are not included, and the listing says English instructions are not guaranteed. It also showed a £4.49 delivery charge when we checked.

Einstein Human Body Science Advent Calendar 2026 (£69.90). The dearest calendar here is a biology project that builds up over December. Each day reveals an organ for a 12-inch human body model with 16 detachable organs, plus an experiment or activity showing how that organ works. The listing says it includes a 50-page step-by-step guide with an illustrated organs factbook, video guides where needed and the lab tools, and that children aged 13 and over can work alone. The model is made from PVC.

Experiments, builds or digs: the four types

Mixed chemistry calendars give a different short experiment most days, such as a reaction or a crystal to grow. In this guide that is the Einstein Science Adventures kit (£29.90), the two UNGLINGA calendars (£16.99 and £19.99) and the pozemu calendar (£22.09).

Build calendars leave something on the shelf. The sudatong (£14.99) and RYJJEEST (£41.30) calendars build a model a day, and the iWinvi calendar (£19.98) builds towards one larger circuit-based physics project. The Einstein Human Body calendar (£69.90) does the same for biology, ending with a full torso model.

The JOYIN calendar (£23.99) is a dig: most days are a geode to crack, with tools and jewellery parts. It suits a rock collector more than a child who wants reactions and fizz.

Which age is each calendar for?

Going by the listings, the UNGLINGA, JOYIN and Einstein Science Adventures calendars start at 8. The RYJJEEST calendar gives 8 to 14. The iWinvi calendar is listed for teenagers, and both Einstein calendars say children aged 13 and over can work alone. The sudatong and pozemu listings name kids, teens and adults rather than a starting age, so read the parts list before giving either to a younger child.

What to look for in a science advent calendar

Check what is actually behind each door. A calendar can say 24 days but mean 24 experiments, 24 models, or a mix of experiments and small objects. The listings here describe all nine as 24 days, but the content ranges from a daily reaction to a daily geode.

Match the subject to the child. Chemistry-led kits suit children who like fizz, slime and crystals; physics and electronics calendars suit those who like to build and wire things; the human body calendar suits a child interested in biology. The table lists the subjects each listing names.

Read the age, and the 'alone' age. Several listings give a lower age for doing the experiments with an adult and a higher one for working independently. If an adult will not be free every morning, choose a calendar whose independent age fits the child.

Plan the extras. Some calendars need household items (water, cooking oil, paper towel or similar) and some build calendars need batteries that are not in the box. Get these ready before 1 December so a missing battery does not hold up day one.

Think about mess and time. Experiment calendars are easier on a wipeable table, and build calendars need a clear space and somewhere to keep small parts. The dig calendar uses a rock hammer and chisel, so it is one to do on a tray with an adult nearby.

Check the seller, delivery charge and delivery date. Several of these are sold by third-party sellers, and the RYJJEEST listing showed a £4.49 delivery charge when we checked. Prices in this guide ranged from £14.99 to £69.90 on 3 November 2026; check the total and the delivery date on Amazon before you order so the calendar arrives before 1 December.

How this guide was put together

We looked at science and STEM advent calendars on Amazon UK on 3 November 2026, read with a London delivery address, and kept only those with a single live buy-box price and a normal in-stock line. That ruled out some well-known names on the day: Thames & Kosmos Science Advent Calendar Vol. 4 showed 'Usually dispatched within 1 to 4 weeks' rather than in stock, Vol. 3 showed 'Usually dispatched within 2 to 3 days', and Vol. 2 and the FRANZIS CheXperiment calendar showed low stock. We also left out activity books, gemstone-only calendars with no experiments, listings with no brand, and a third UNGLINGA calendar that overlaps the two included. Subjects, ages and extras come from each listing. We have not used star ratings or review counts.

Prices were checked on Amazon UK on 3 November 2026 and can change at any time. Check the current price, details and delivery date on Amazon before you order.

Frequently asked questions

When do you start an advent calendar?

Advent calendars are usually started on 1 December, with one door opened each day until Christmas Eve (or Christmas Day on calendars with 25 doors). All nine science calendars in this guide have 24 days, so the first experiment is on 1 December and the last on 24 December. If you want the extras ready in time, check each calendar's list of household items and batteries in late November.

How many days are usually in an advent calendar?

Most advent calendars have 24 days, running from 1 to 24 December. Some modern calendars have 25 so the last door falls on Christmas Day, and a few have 12. Every science calendar in this guide is listed as 24 days, boxes, doors or compartments.

What is Thames and Kosmos?

Thames & Kosmos is a maker of science kits, STEM toys, games and magic sets. It was founded in 2001 in Newport, Rhode Island, in partnership with the German publisher Kosmos, which published its first science kit in 1922. It makes the well-known Science Advent Calendar series, but when we checked Amazon UK on 3 November 2026, Vol. 4 showed 'Usually dispatched within 1 to 4 weeks' rather than in stock, so it is not in our picks.

What are science kits?

Science kits are boxed sets with the materials and instructions for hands-on experiments or builds, so a child can try chemistry, physics, geology or biology at home. A science advent calendar splits a kit into 24 daily parts. The listings in this guide say what is included and what you need to add, such as household items or batteries.
